What is project-Based Learning & Project-Based Science?

By Dr. Ronelus
Project-Based Science (PBS) instructional model differs from problem-based learning environments in that a greater emphasis is placed on addressing the problem situation holistically from multiple perspectives, rather than solving a problem or designing a solution. Project-Based Science is an instructional model that is deeply rooted in inquiry pedagogy. The PBS model is a theoretical framework that can be used to design science-learning environments that measure up to the National Science Education Standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The PBS learning environment actively engaged students in authentic investigation using the scientific inquiry approach to construct new knowledge based on their knowledge schema; inquiry as a mode of learning is the pedagogical approach. Below are a few examples students' artifacts which showcase the essence of project-based and problem-based learning which took place in an authentic learning environment.
